In a significant step towards propelling artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and development in the UAE, the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications Office has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung Gulf Electronics. This collaboration aligns with the UAE’s ambitious Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which aims to position the country as a global leader in AI by 2031.

It also aligns with Samsung’s objectives and efforts in this field through joint work to use the capabilities of artificial intelligence to enhance economic growth, contribute to sustainable development, and improve the well-being of life in communities.

The MoU was signed by Saqr Binghalib, Executive Director of the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications Office, and Seong H. Cho, President of Samsung Electronics MENA, during the “AI Retreat 2024.”

This event, organized by the Dubai Center for Artificial Intelligence (DCAI) in partnership with the National Program for Artificial Intelligence, underscores the UAE’s commitment to integrating AI into various sectors for economic growth and sustainable development.

Saqr Binghalib emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving the UAE’s vision of becoming a premier global AI hub. He noted that combining governmental and private sector expertise will accelerate the growth of the AI ecosystem, develop future competencies, and empower the next generation of AI innovators.

DooHee Lee, President of Samsung Gulf Electronics, said, “Samsung believes in the power of technology and AI to make a positive impact on society. We are proud to partner with the UAE Office of AI to support the UAE’s ambitious vision for AI. Together, we will work to drive AI adoption in government, nurture local AI talent, and showcase how AI can be used as a tool for positive transformation. This collaboration builds on our ongoing efforts, such as the recent launch of Galaxy AI, to push the boundaries of what is possible with AI.”

As part of the MOU, the two organizations will jointly pursue efforts to promote AI learning by the youth through various initiatives. These include integrating Samsung’s Innovation Campus (SIC) CSR program into the UAE’s AI Summer Camp 2024 edition, as well as collaborating to launch the Galaxy AI Pioneers program to train youth on AI.

The Galaxy AI Pioneers program is a month-long course designed for students aged 13-18, providing a comprehensive introduction to AI, machine learning, and Python coding. The curriculum covers essential AI concepts such as deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and AI robotics. Delivered in a hybrid online and onsite format, the program blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

Participants will develop applications showcasing their AI skills, utilizing Galaxy AI features to support their innovative ideas. Upon completion, they will receive a certificate from the UAE Office of AI, recognizing their achievements and newfound expertise in AI.

Moreover, Samsung’s Innovation Campus is a global initiative providing ICT education to students and youth. Beyond core competencies like AI, IoT, Big Data, and coding, the program also emphasizes soft skills development, preparing participants to become future societal leaders.

This partnership between the UAE AI Office and Samsung represents a strategic step towards achieving the UAE’s AI aspirations and nurturing a generation of skilled AI professionals.

Saudi Arabia Prepares for a Surge in Chinese Tourists with Approved Destination Status and Enhanced Travel Options

Saudi Arabia has been granted Approved Destination Status (ADS) by China, paving the way for a significant boost in tourism starting July 1. Following Saudi Arabia’s participation in the second China roadshow and ITB China in Shanghai, this new designation is expected to bring up to 5 million Chinese tourists to the Kingdom by 2030, facilitated by streamlined visa processes and increased flight availability.

The move highlights Saudi Arabia’s dedication to becoming a key economic partner with China, fostering mutual understanding, friendship, and economic development for both countries.

The ADS designation is a milestone for group travel to Saudi Arabia, as the Kingdom aims to position China as its third-largest source market for international arrivals by 2030. To prepare, Saudi Arabia has significantly increased direct flights since 2023, introduced tailored products, and formed strategic partnerships to enhance group and Flexible Independent Travel (FIT) experiences.

Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al Khateeb stated, “The official ADS status demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s readiness for Chinese visitors and our progress toward making China our third largest tourism market by 2030.

“The Saudi Tourism Authority has played a crucial role in visa facilitation, reduced fees, improving air connectivity, and ensuring destination readiness with Mandarin-language information available on www.visitsaudi.cn, Mandarin signage at airports, and Mandarin-speaking tour guides and hotel staff.”

Abdulrahman Ahmad Al Harbi, KSA’s Ambassador to China, said: “By strengthening bilateral ties with China, the ADS agreement opens doors for economic development across sectors, benefiting both nations.”

STA CEO, Fahd Hamidaddin added: “Saudi’s approval as a tourist destination for Chinese visitors reflects our continuous efforts and participation in trade shows and conferences, leading to agreements with Chinese organisations.

“We strive to provide a seamless, enjoyable, and safe experience for Chinese tourists, including streamlined visa procedures, increased flight capacity, and Mandarin integration across airports, destinations, tourist sites, and digital platforms like the Visit Saudi website.

“Partnerships with trusted Chinese brands such as UnionPay, Trip.com, Huawei, and Tencent further enhance our offerings.”

Saudi Arabia plans to attract 5 million Chinese tourists by 2030, with new direct flights from Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern, in addition to existing Saudia flights. These initiatives represent a 130% increase in inbound seat capacity, doubling the weekly flight frequency compared to a year ago.
